John J. Carney is an attorney and real estate developer with over 50 years of experience in commercial development, investment and the management of apartment buildings and commercial real estate.

John and his partner Bob Rains are pioneers in the redevelopment of historic buildings in downtown Cleveland, Ohio and in Indianapolis, Indiana. Their projects include:

  • W.H. Block building in downtown Indianapolis -163 high-end apartments and 139 indoor parking spaces
  • Bridgeview Apartments in downtown Cleveland – 247 apartments, 15,000 square feet of commercial space and 220 indoor parking spaces
  • Colonial and Euclid Arcades, currently called the 5th Street Arcades, in downtown Cleveland – mixed-use facility including a 175 room Residence Inn, 40,000 square feet of retail space and 120 indoor parking spaces
  • Water Street Apartments and Condominiums in downtown Cleveland -101 residential units
  • Perry Payne in downtown Cleveland – 93 residential units and 8,500 square feet of commercial space
  • Grand Arcade in downtown Cleveland – 91 residential units and 13,000 square feet of commercial space
  • Moreland Courts Condominiums in Shaker Heights, Ohio – $17,000,000 historic rehabilitation
  • Cort Shoe Building in downtown Cleveland – 8,000 square feet of commercial space

  • Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in the Urban Environment, a national honor
  • Northern Ohio Live Awards of Achievement in Restoration
  • American Institute of Architects’ Award for Exceptional Accomplishment
  • Cleveland Restoration Society’s Award of Excellence
  • Greater Cleveland Growth Association’s Downtown Achievement Award

Civic Leadership:

  • Board of Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority from 1998 to 2010, and served as its Chairman
  • Board and Executive Committee of the Downtown Cleveland Partnership
  • Member of the Visiting Committee of the Cleveland State University Levin School of Urban Studies
  • Trustee of the Playhouse Square Foundation
  • First Chairman of the Downtown Cleveland Improvement Corp
  • Chairman of the Downtown Cleveland Alliance and is currently an Emeritus member of its Board

John is an avid reader and book collector. He enjoys travel, hiking and skiing.

John earned a bachelor’s degree in 1966 from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts and a juris doctorate in 1969 from Columbia University Law School in New York.
